The Storm Engine Co. is one of 4 fire companies within the city of Derby. The Storm Ambulance & Rescue Corp is the only EMS and rescue provider in the City. Although two separate organizations, we operate mostly as one unit. We protect an area of 5.5 square miles with a population of approx. 13,000 people. Derby is located about 10 miles outside of New Haven. Together we operate 2 engines, 1 heavy rescue, 2 ambulances, 2 hazmat units, and 2 marine units. We respond to around 1500 emergencies annually.

Two Injured When Car Hits Tree On The Green

At approx. 16:15 hrs FD-9, Rescue 18, E-11 and E16 were dispatched to the Minerva St side of the Derby Green for a car that hit a tree. Upon arrival the crew of FD-9 found the two occupants out of the vehicle sitting on a bench on the Derby Green. They were helped by bystanders gathering for a concert on the Green. The vehicle suffered significant damage, though both persons were only shaken up they were transported to Griffin Hospital for evaluation. Units worked the scene for approx. 30 mins.

 
   
   
 
Marine 1 In Right Place At Right Time

Marine 1 out on the Housatonic River for a training cruise was called by swimmers to the shore near the Recreation Camp for an injured swimmer. A female in her teens apparently injured her head while swimming or diving into the river. The crew of Marine 1 stabilized the patient's spine, administered emergency care and called for FD-9 and met it at Whitey's Marina to transfer the patient to the ambulance for transport to St Vincent's trauma center.  

 
 
Motorcycle Accident Causes Rope Rescue

At approx. 1816 hrs FD-9, E-11,16 and Rescue 18 were dispatched to exit 16 South on Rte 8 for a reported MCA. Units found a MC that hit the guard rail, it vaulted the operator over the jersey barrier and down an embankment. Rescue 18 utilized the rope rescue equipment to remove the victim in a stokes basket. Leaky Cooler Causes Haz-Mat Activation

At approx. 1120 hrs FD-9 was dispatched to 636 New Haven Av. for a report of someone with difficulty breathing. Upon arrival they found four people who were complaining of respiratory problems. All were in the grocery store in the area of a refrigeration unit that was believed to be leaking. FD-9 called for a haz-mat response and box 545 was struck. Eng. 11, Eng. 14, Eng 16, Rescue 18, Haz-Mat 1 and Truck 15 were dispatched. FD-9 assisted the four occupants of the building while evacuating the building. Upon arrival of the haz-mat team the building was vented and monitored with no results. DEP was called to the scene. No patients were transported. FD officials turned the scene over to the DEP. All units were on scene for approx. 45 mins.

In the early hours of July 5th a call was made for the Haz-Mat team to respond to an MVA in Shelton to assist Shelton Fire with approx. 20-25 gals of gasoline that spilled from a pick up truck involved in a motor vehicle accident. Rescue 18 and Haz-Mat 1 responded

 
   
   
 
MCA LEAVES DRIVER IN HOSPITAL

FD-9, Rescue 18, Engines 13 and 16 were dispatched to Sodom Lane for a reported motor cycle accident. Units found the operator of the MC injured. He was Treated and transported to the Yale New Naven Trauma Center. Units worked the scene for approx. 45 mins.

 
   
   
 
MVA ADDS TO REALLY BUSY DAY

On top of the water rescue and house fire, Rescue 18, FD-10, FD-9, Engines 13 and 16 were dispatched to New Haven Avenue in the area of Wendy's Restaurant for a reported serious motor vehicle accident. Upon arrival units found a two car accident with significant damage to both vehicles. Two patients were transported to the Yale New Haven Trauma Canter. Units worked the scene approx. 45 mins.

 
   
   
 
FIRST DUE HOUSE FIRE

At 1411 hours FireComm transmitted box number 34 reporting a fire at number 124 Hawkins Street, units were also advised that people might still be in the building. Dispatched were Engine 11, 12, 16, Truck 15, Rescue 18 and FD9. First arriving FD9 and Engine 11 found a 2 1/2 story frame dwelling with a heavy fire condition in the rear of the structure. Crews advanced numerous handlines into the structure as fire had advanced to all three floors. Engine 13 was special called to the scene. Numerous occupants needed medical attention so mutual aid ambulances were called. Due to the hot weather, engines from Shelton and Ansonia were called to the scene to relieve the initial crews. While picking up, crews were alerted to a possible person down around the corner from the fire scene. Shelton FD personnel found a female victim in cardiac arrest 1 block down and performed CPR until the victim was transported to the hospital. NEAR DROWNING ON RIVER

A busy afternoon continued when FD9 was dispatched to the Housatonic River in the area of the Rec camp for a report of a drowning with the party out of the water. Upon arrival it was determined that the patient was out of the water but was on a platform in the middle of the river. Marine 1 was then requested to respond. Capt Hart and FF/Paramedic Dan Mascolo then swam out to the victim, started patient care then used a passing boat to bring the victim to shore. The patient was transported to Griffin Hospital. VICTIM REPORTED MISSING IN RIVER

Water rescue units from Derby and Shelton were called to the Housatonic River for a reported victim in the water. Units deployed and began a search, however not too long into the operation information was developed that proved the report to be erroneous. Units worked the scene for approx. 30 mins. PATIENT CRUSHED BY HANDI-LIFT

Around noon on Saturday FD9 was dispatched to 214 Sentinel Hill Rd. for an injury sustained by a lift in a handicapped van. Upon arrival FD9 called for Rescue 18 to possibly assist with extrication. The lift on the van malfunctioned and crushed the victim inside the van. The patient was free upon arrival of FD9, but the rear seats had to be removed and manpower was needed to package and remove the patient complaining of neck and back pain. The patient was transported to Griffin Hospital.

 
   
 
DOOR REMOVAL ON LAUREL AVE

At approx 2330 hours Engines 13, 16, Rescue 18 and FD9 were dispatched to a MVA in front of 18 Laurel Ave. Upon arrival crews found a vehicle that had struck several parked cars and the driver had serious injuries. The passenger door was removed using the tool from FD9 in order to remove the patient from the vehicle. The driver was transported to Yale New Haven Hospitals Trauma Center.

 
   
   
 
HEAT AND HUMIDITY BREAK WITH SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS

The unbearable 100 degree hot and humid weather finally came to an end, however it ended with a loud bang. Severe thunderstorms rolled through the area downing trees, power lines and dropping heavy rain. All pieces of fire apparatus from every company in town responded to calls of wires down during the storm. High St, Prospect St, David Humphreys Rd & Olivia St. were hit the hardest. Crews were called to their stations to stand-by. No injuries were reported. During the four day heat wave EMS crews were kept very busy responding to 27 calls for service.

 
 
ELECTRICAL FIRE ON FIFTH ST

At approx. 1115 hrs Eng. 11, 12 16 Rescue 18, Truck 15 and FD9 were dispatched to the Learning Center on the corner of Fifth and Olivia St. for a reported fire in the basement. Upon arrival the day care was evacuated and personnel found an active electrical fire in the basement. It took several minutes to extinguish the fire. Temporary shelter was given to the children at the board of Education offices across the street. Units worked the scene for approx. 45 minutes. There were no injuries.

 
   
   
 
UNUSUALLY BUSY DAY

Between 7:00 AM and 9:30 PM members responded to 16 calls. 4 calls were for Motor Vehicle accidents, including a motorcycle accident on Cottage St. which required a trauma alert to Bridgeport Hospital. At approx. 11:00 AM FD10 and Rescue 18 were dispatched to the construction site of the new Griffin Hospital Cancer Center for a worker who came in contact with an electrical wire and suffered a long fall off a ladder. The worker was transported to Bridgeport Hospital for burns on his hand and injuries sustained from the fall. 10 other calls were for medical emergencies and the other was a camper fire on Pershing Drive which burned several months ago and has not been removed from the property.
